Evgeny Svetlanov was a prominent Russian conductor, composer, and pianist. He studied conducting at the Moscow Conservatory and became the chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in 1962. From 1965 to 2000, he served as the chief conductor of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra. Svetlanov was renowned for his interpretations of Russian composers such as Glinka, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff. Among his significant recordings is the complete cycle of Nikolai Myaskovsky's symphonies. In addition to conducting, he was also a composer, with works including a symphony and a piano concerto.
