Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was an Italian Baroque composer, violinist, and organist, born on January 4, 1710, in Jesi. His intermezzo "La serva padrona" became one of the most celebrated stage works of the 18th century. Other notable works include the opera seria "L'Olimpiade" and the sacred composition "Stabat Mater." Pergolesi was a prominent figure of the Neapolitan school, and his works influenced the development of opera buffa in Europe. He died on March 16, 1736, in Pozzuoli at the age of 26.
