Idir, born Hamid Cheriet in 1945 in Aït Yenni, Algeria, was an Algerian singer and songwriter. Initially studying geology, he unexpectedly entered the music scene in 1973 when he substituted for a singer on a radio broadcast. His song "A Vava Inouva" became an international hit, translated into seven languages. Idir was renowned for advocating Kabyle and Berber culture. Notable albums include "A Vava Inouva" (1976), "Ay Arrac Nneɣ" (1979), and "Identités" (1999). He collaborated with artists like Manu Chao and Cheb Khaled. Idir passed away in 2020 at the age of 70.
