Irving Mills was an American music publisher, manager, and musician, notable for his role in the jazz era. Born on January 16, 1894, in New York City, he co-founded Mills Music Inc. with his brother Jack in 1919, which became one of the largest music publishing companies of its time. Mills managed Duke Ellington from 1926 to 1939, helping him achieve widespread recognition. He also discovered and promoted artists like Cab Calloway and Hoagy Carmichael. As a composer, he is known under the pseudonym Joe Primrose, under which he wrote "St. James Infirmary." He passed away on April 21, 1985, in Palm Springs, California.
