Ivo Pogorelich is a Croatian pianist born in 1958 in Belgrade. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and gained international attention in 1980 after a controversial elimination from the International Chopin Piano Competition, leading juror Martha Argerich to resign in protest. Pogorelich is known for his unconventional interpretations and extensive repertoire, encompassing works from the Baroque to the 20th century. He has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon and Sony Classical, with albums featuring works by Chopin, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff. In 1988, he was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
