Sir James Galway is an Irish flutist born in Belfast in 1939. After studying at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, as well as the Paris Conservatoire, he began his career with the Sadler's Wells Opera and the Royal Opera Covent Garden. In 1969, he became the principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. In 1975, he launched a solo career, selling over 30 million recordings and collaborating with artists like Stevie Wonder and Elton John. His repertoire spans classical, Celtic, and pop music.
