Jay McShann was an American jazz pianist, vocalist, and bandleader, known as "Hootie". Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, he was largely self-taught. In 1936, he moved to Kansas City, where he formed his own big band that included a young Charlie Parker. McShann's band was renowned for its unique style blending swing and blues, with their biggest hit being "Confessin' the Blues". After World War II, he continued his musical career, often collaborating with blues vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon. McShann was honored as an NEA Jazz Master in 1987, and his contributions to jazz music are still recognized today.
