Jean Ter-Merguerian was a French violinist of Armenian descent. Born on October 5, 1935, in Marseille, he began studying violin at the age of 11 at the Marseille Conservatoire under Gabriel Rey. In 1947, he debuted as a soloist with Vivaldi's A minor Concerto and Mendelssohn's E minor Concerto with the Orchestre du Conservatoire conducted by André Audoli. That same year, his family moved to the Soviet Armenian Republic, where he continued his studies in Yerevan with Karp Dombayev and later at the Moscow Conservatory in David Oistrakh's class. Throughout his career, he performed with major orchestras and conductors and was known for his interpretations of the classical violin repertoire.
