Joe Bataan, born Bataan Nitollano, is an American singer and musician known as the "King of Latin Soul". He grew up in Spanish Harlem, New York, and in 1966 formed his first band, "Joe Bataan and the Latin Swingers". His music blends Latin boogaloo and African American doo-wop. He released several significant albums, including "Gypsy Woman" (1967), "Subway Joe" (1968), and "Riot!" (1968). In 1973, he founded his own label, Ghetto Records, and in 1979 released "Rap-O Clap-O", an early hip-hop hit.
