Joe McPhee is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist who plays the tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn, and valve trombone. Born in Miami, Florida, he grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York. He began his recording career in 1967 and is known for his work in free jazz from the late 1960s onward. Notable albums include "Nation Time" (1971), "Tenor" (1977), and "Visitation" (1985). McPhee has collaborated with musicians such as Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, and Ken Vandermark.
