Johann Gottlieb Graun was a German Baroque and Classical era composer and violinist. He studied under Johann Georg Pisendel in Dresden and Giuseppe Tartini in Padua. In 1726, he became concertmaster in Merseburg, and in 1732, he joined the court of the Prussian crown prince, the future Frederick the Great. In 1740, he was appointed concertmaster of the Berlin Opera. Graun is known for his instrumental works, including over 80 concertos for various instruments such as violin, viola, viola da gamba, and flute. His compositions are valued for their melodic invention and technical complexity.
