Johnny Pacheco was a Dominican musician, composer, and producer who played a pivotal role in the development of the modern Latin American music genre of salsa. In 1964, he co-founded Fania Records, serving as its musical director and producer. His 1964 album "Cañonazo" was the label's first release and introduced his new group, Pacheco y su Nuevo Tumbao, featuring vocalist Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez. Pacheco was known for collaborations with artists like Celia Cruz and was a nine-time Grammy nominee. In 2005, he received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
