Kitty Wells, born Ellen Muriel Deason in Nashville, Tennessee, was a pioneering American country singer. In 1952, she achieved a breakthrough with "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," becoming the first female artist to top the Billboard country chart. This song was a response to Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life," blaming unfaithful men for "fallen women." Wells continued her successful career with hits like "Making Believe" and "Heartbreak U.S.A." In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and in 1991, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Her contributions paved the way for future female country artists.
