Last Word Quintet is a Chicago-based musical ensemble formed in 2017 during the Uptown Poetry Slam. The group consists of musicians Al Day (vocals, guitar), Bob Long (piano), Doug Lofstrom (bass guitar), Brian Gephart (saxophone), and poet Marc Kelly Smith. Their work blends jazz music with poetry, as evident in their 2024 album "Falling to Earth," which includes tracks like "Iron Tango" and "Children of Paradise." Drummer Sarah Allen also contributed to the recording. The ensemble is known for its unique fusion of music and poetry, creating rich narratives of urban life.
