Manfred Schoof is a German jazz trumpeter born in 1936 in Magdeburg. He studied music in Kassel and Cologne, where one of his teachers was big band leader Kurt Edelhagen. In the 1960s, he formed a free jazz group with Alexander von Schlippenbach and Gerd Dudek, which became the foundation for the Manfred Schoof Orchestra. From 1969 to 1971, he was a member of the George Russell Orchestra. He has also collaborated with Jasper Van't Hof and the Globe Unity Orchestra. Schoof composes classical music for the Berlin Philharmonic, and his group participated in performances of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera "Die Soldaten." Since 1990, he has been a professor in Cologne.
