Mariss Jansons was a Latvian conductor renowned for his interpretations of works by Mahler, Strauss, and Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. He served as music director of the Oslo Philharmonic (1979–2000), Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1997–2004), Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (2003–2019), and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (2004–2015).
