Miriam Makeba, known as "Mama Africa", was a South African singer and anti-apartheid activist. Born in 1932, she gained fame in the 1960s with the song "Pata Pata". In 1966, she won a Grammy Award for the album "An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba". During her exile in the USA and Guinea, she continued her fight against apartheid.
