Nicholas Ward is an English conductor and violinist born in 1952 in Manchester. He studied at the Northern College of Music and in Brussels under André Gertler. Ward played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and, in 1984, became the leader of the Northern Chamber Orchestra, where he has served as music director since 1986. He is known for recordings of Haydn and Mozart symphonies for the Naxos label. His repertoire also includes works by Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Under his direction, the Northern Chamber Orchestra has gained recognition as one of England's leading chamber ensembles.
