Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam is a classical voice training program specializing in opera, accessible to all children and young people from 4 years old who enjoy singing. It was founded in 2005, and shortly after its inception, the idea arose to perform a Nativity play annually, featuring all students simultaneously. The musical foundation was formed by Christmas songs that Ton Koopman had previously arranged for the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. The first performance was accompanied only by a piano, with angels, sheep, and shepherds performing alongside Mary and Joseph. It proved to be an immediate success and evolved into a full evening's entertainment. In 2017, the performance consisted of Old Dutch and Western European Christmas music, arranged and directed by Ton Koopman, especially for Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. Over 350 students, aged 4 to 21, performed the pieces at the highest level, accompanied by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.
