Olivier Messiaen was a French composer known for his innovative approaches to rhythm and harmony. While imprisoned in a German POW camp in 1940, he composed "Quatuor pour la fin du Temps" for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, which premiered in the camp in 1941.
