Paul Chambers was an American jazz double bassist, known for his participation in Miles Davis's "first great quintet" from 1955 to 1963. He recorded approximately a dozen albums as a leader or co-leader and over 100 as a sideman. His 1957 album "Bass on Top," recorded with guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Hank Jones, and drummer Art Taylor, is considered a classic of the hard bop era.
