Paul Chihara is an American composer born in 1938 in Seattle. During World War II, he was interned at the Minidoka camp in Idaho. He earned degrees in English literature from the University of Washington and Cornell University, and a doctorate in music from Cornell. He studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Ernst Pepping in Berlin, and Gunther Schuller at Tanglewood. He was the first composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and has taught at UCLA and New York University. Chihara has composed over 100 film and television scores, including "Prince of the City" and "Crossing Delancey". His concert works include symphonies, concertos, and ballets such as "Shinju" and "The Tempest". His music often reflects influences from Asian music and culture.
