Percy Sledge was an American R&B, soul, and gospel singer, best known for his 1966 hit "When a Man Loves a Woman," which reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. Born on November 25, 1940, in Leighton, Alabama, he worked as a hospital orderly before beginning his music career. His other notable songs include "Warm and Tender Love," "It Tears Me Up," and "Take Time to Know Her." In 1989, he received the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award, and in 2005, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He passed away on April 14, 2015, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
