This album serves as a Sisyphean parable about labor and life, with vocalist Rick Maguire exploring themes of workaholism, the myth of meritocracy, and the acceptance of mortality. Musically, the album balances between light and shadow, chaos and order, featuring heated guitars, shifting drums, eerie synthesizers, and aqueous strings that create a panoramic production with loud-quiet dynamics, matching the band's emotional performances. The album was recorded in Pawtucket, RI, at Machines with Magnets with longtime engineer Miranda Serra and mixed by Seth Manchester. "Sunshine and Balance Beams" marks Pile's first release under Chicago's Sooper Records.
