R.E.M. celebrates the 25th anniversary of their eleventh studio album, 'Up,' marking a bold departure from their traditional sound. Released in 1998, the album incorporates drum machines, loops, and synthesizers, creating a dreamy and experimental tone. Following drummer Bill Berry's departure, the band transformed into a trio and embraced a new direction, intentionally distancing themselves from their previous work. The album features notable tracks like 'Daysleeper' and 'Lotus,' achieving moderate commercial success. A remastered reissue with additional content, including a live performance on 'Party of Five,' is now available, providing an opportunity for reassessment.
