Red Krayola is an American avant-garde rock band formed in 1966 in Houston, Texas. The original lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Mayo Thompson, drummer Frederick Barthelme, and bassist Steve Cunningham. The band was known for its experimental approach to music, incorporating noise and free improvisation. Their 1967 debut album, "The Parable of Arable Land," featured a combination of confrontational rock songs and improvised "Free Form Freak-Out" sections. In the 1970s and 1980s, Thompson collaborated with various post-punk and experimental artists, including Pere Ubu and The Raincoats. In the 1990s, the band released albums "Hazel" and "Fingerpainting" under the Drag City label, collaborating with members of the Chicago post-rock scene.
