Riccardo Chailly is an Italian conductor who has served as the music director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2016. Born in Milan in 1953, he studied at conservatories in Perugia, Rome, and Milan. He began his career as an assistant to Claudio Abbado at La Scala. Chailly was the chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam (1988–2004) and the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig (2005–2016). With the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, he has recorded works by composers such as Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Chailly is renowned for his contributions to the interpretation of the classical repertoire, and his recordings have received numerous awards.
