Rolando Villazón is a Mexican operatic tenor, stage director, author, and artistic director. He gained international recognition in 1999 after winning several prizes at Plácido Domingo's "Operalia" competition. He made his European debut as Des Grieux in Massenet's "Manon" in Genoa, followed by performances at Opéra de Paris and Staatsoper Berlin. Villazón regularly performs at leading opera houses worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. In 2007, he signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has since released over 20 CDs and DVDs. Beyond singing, he engages in stage directing, literature, and serves as the artistic director of the Mozarteum Foundation and the Mozart Week festival in Salzburg.
