Russell Oberlin was an American singer and founding member of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua, recognized as the first acknowledged countertenor in the United States. Born in 1928 in Akron, Ohio, he studied at the Juilliard School of Music. In the 1950s and 60s, he was a pioneer in early music, with a repertoire spanning from medieval liturgical dramas to 20th-century operas. Notable recordings include "The Complete Recordings on American Decca". At age 36, he retired from active performance to teach at Hunter College in New York.
