Sleep is an American stoner/doom metal band from San Jose, California. Formed in 1990, the band's consistent members are guitarist Matt Pike and bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros. Their second album, "Sleep's Holy Mountain" (1992), is considered pivotal in the stoner metal genre. After disbanding in 1998, they released "Dopesmoker," regarded as a doom metal classic. The band reunited in 2009 and released "The Sciences" in 2018. Their music is characterized by slow, downtuned riffs and repetitive structures that create a hypnotic effect.
