The Deep River Boys were an American gospel group formed in the 1930s at Hampton Institute in Virginia. The original lineup included Harry Douglass, Vernon Gardner, George Lawson, and Edward Ware. The group gained fame for their renditions of spirituals, gospel, and R&B music. During World War II, they performed for American troops as part of the USO. Notable recordings include "Recess in Heaven" (1952) and "That's Right," which charted on the UK Singles Chart in 1956. They collaborated with artists like Count Basie and Fats Waller and were particularly popular in Europe, especially Scandinavia. In 2019, their 1941 recording "They Look Like Men of War" was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
