The Verlaines are a New Zealand rock band from Dunedin, formed in 1981 by Graeme Downes. They are known for their complex song structures and lyrics often laced with black humor. Notable albums include "Hallelujah All The Way Home" (1985), "Bird Dog" (1987), and "Some Disenchanted Evening" (1989). Their song "Death and the Maiden" is considered a classic of the Dunedin sound. The band was closely associated with Flying Nun Records and influenced many other New Zealand bands. Graeme Downes is also an academic who has lectured at the University of Otago.
