Tino Contreras was a Mexican jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader who recorded and performed internationally over a career spanning more than 60 years. In 1957, he formed his first quartet, reflecting a wide range of influences. Key albums from this period include "Jazz Tropical" and "Jazz a Paris" (both from 1962), "Jazz Ballet" (1963), and "Misa en Jazz" (1966). Throughout his career, Contreras was a prominent figure in Mexico's jazz scene, winning the National Festival of Jazz award each year between 1959 and 1966.
