Warsaw was the original incarnation of the British post-punk band Joy Division. Formed in 1976 in Salford, England, the group consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals), Bernard Sumner (guitar), Peter Hook (bass), and Stephen Morris (drums). Initially named The Stiff Kittens, they later renamed themselves Warsaw after David Bowie's track "Warszawa." In 1977, they recorded five tracks at Pennine Sound Studios in Oldham. In January 1978, they changed their name to Joy Division to avoid confusion with the London punk band Warsaw Pakt. Their music was influenced by punk and later evolved into their distinctive post-punk sound.
