What Is This was an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California. Originally known as Anthym, the band originated at Fairfax High School and comprised guitarist Hillel Slovak, drummer Jack Irons, vocalist Alain Johannes, and bassist Todd Strassman. In 1984, they released their debut EP 'Squeezed', followed by their only full-length album 'What Is This?' in 1985. After Slovak's departure to join the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Irons' subsequent exit, the band disbanded. Johannes and Irons later collaborated in the band Eleven.
