Friedrich Gulda was an Austrian pianist and composer known for his work in both classical music and jazz. He studied at the Vienna Music Academy and in 1946 won first prize at the Geneva International Music Competition. Gulda was renowned for his interpretations of Mozart and Beethoven, recording the complete Beethoven sonatas in the 1960s. In the 1950s, he developed an interest in jazz, performing at Birdland in New York and the Newport Jazz Festival. He collaborated with artists such as Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul.
