Hood Smoke is a Chicago-based music group led by bassist Bryan Doherty. Their 2012 debut album, "Laid Up in Ordinary," blends elements of soul, funky organ jazz, and rock, drawing inspiration from 1970s bands like Seawind and Rufus. Doherty's bass lines provide the rhythmic foundation for vocalist Sarah Marie Young, winner of the 2011 Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. The band is rounded out by drummer Michael Caskey, keyboardist Rob Clearfield, and guitarist Dave Miller. The album was recorded at I.V. Lab in Chicago and released under the Origin Records label.
