Inti-Illimani is a Chilean musical ensemble formed in 1967 by a group of university students. Their music blends traditional Andean rhythms with modern Latin American elements, creating a unique sound. During the 1973 Chilean military coup, they were on tour in Europe and unable to return to their country, where their music was banned. While in exile in Europe, their music took on a multifaceted character, incorporating elements of European baroque and other traditional music forms into their rich and colorful Latin American rhythms. They are considered among the most internationally known members of the nueva canción movement.
