Machito, born Frank Raul Grillo, was a Cuban musician who emigrated to New York City in the late 1930s. He is credited as a pioneer in fusing jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms into salsa. In 1982, he recorded the album "Machito and His Salsa Big Band 1982" with his 14-member orchestra, featuring seven tracks recorded at Fendal Sound Studio in the Netherlands. The album won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording. Machito continued touring Europe with his Salsa Big Band until his death in 1984.
