Matata was a significant African rock and funk band formed in Nairobi during the 1960s. Originally known as Air Fiesta Matata, the group gained popularity among Kenya's younger generation and later achieved international recognition. In 1972, they released their debut album "Air Fiesta" under President Records. Their music blended elements of jazz, soul, and funk with African rhythms, featuring songs sung in various languages including Mijikenda, Lingala, Swahili, and English. The band received the "Best Band in Africa" award from the BBC World Service and performed in various countries including the United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland. Their second album "Independence" from 1974 featured guest appearances by notable African musicians such as Dudu Pukwana and Mongezi Feza. The products available from the artist Matata include CDs.
