Michael Nesmith was an American musician and songwriter, known as a member of The Monkees and their television series in the 1960s. After leaving the group in 1970, he formed The First National Band, releasing the album "Magnetic South" and achieving the hit "Joanne". Nesmith was a pioneer of country rock and later engaged in music video production, with his work "Elephant Parts" winning the first Grammy Award for music video in 1981.
