The Manhattans are an American soul group formed in 1962 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Initially starting as a doo-wop quintet, they later gained fame as smooth soul balladeers. Their biggest hits include "Kiss and Say Goodbye" from 1976 and "Shining Star" from 1980, for which they won a Grammy Award. The group was influenced by doo-wop pioneers like The Moonglows and The Drifters, as well as Motown groups like The Temptations. Throughout their career, they collaborated with artists such as Bobby Womack and Regina Belle. In 1999, they were inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
